OPEN CALL: EXHIBITION I

PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP SHOW

“Pictures concerned not with how the world is constructed but with the more ambiguous question of what it looks like.” - John Szarkowski

Exhibition I is inspired by Minor White, American photographer, theoretician, critic, and educator and his contributions to the photograph as a sequence. White came to adopt Alfred Stieglitz's theory of equivalence, where the image represents something other than the subject matter, and his use of sequencing pictorial imagery. White wrote in his journal that he expressed his doubt that he was ready to become a serious photographer at one of their meetings. Stieglitz asked him, “Have you ever been in love?" White answered, “Yes.” Stieglitz replied, "Then you can photograph." In the fashion of Minor White, Exhibition 1 explores the idea of a sequence through a survey of lens-based artists and their depictions of life through a constellation of photographs within this group exhibition.
